Hitting jumps in the terrain park for the first time is exciting and can be scary if you don’t know what to do. Here is a trick tip to make sure you feel comfortable and own the air versus just riding through it.

First thing is to understand how to P.O.P (Projection of primary) ideally we want to use both our upper body and lower body to get the momentum going and doing an Ollie. Get comfortable doing this in the flats not moving.

Then practice doing it whilst moving on a green groomed trail. Look to challenge yourself by timing it to takeoff at a specific point as if it was the lip of a jump. Use a line in the snow or a shadow.

Then look to use a little roller so that you can feel the difference in the pitch of the hill to time your Ollie.

Finally it’s time to take it to a small park jump. Making sure you are aware of the speed needed. Look to get a solid P.O.P off the tail at the lip of the jump. Then pull your legs up so you are small and balanced in the air. Finally extend your legs to absorb that landing.

Once you are comfortable we can start adding lots of tricks. Stay tuned for some more trick tips to see some of the favorite grabs.

This weeks trick tip is all about locking in that grab when hitting jumps. First make sure you are comfortable hitting jumps and getting some good pop off of them.

Once you are comfortable with this start with getting aware of the different grabs by trying them without moving to lock in the placement and feeling of the grabs.

Then try hitting the jumps and instead of fully doing the grab at first you can simply just go for a quick touch.

Once you are comfy with this it’s time to go ahead and lock in those grabs!! Once you feel you are getting them we’ll try to tweak them as well and pulling and pushing against whilst grabbing to show more comfort with the grab. Enjoy and continue to try all the different grabs.

The Chip Shot is a fun trick where you basically kick the tail of your board into the snow using your toe side edge.

Fist start on the flats with no board on working through the movements of jumping up and quickly extending your rear leg to kick your back foot toe into the snow and then pulling it up to then land on two feet.

Now try the same movement without sliding but with the board on. Remember we are trying to add a bit of rotation when we do it to be able to get the toe side edge of the tail into the snow. Beware that you will have to rotate back to straighten the board back out before landing.

Now try just sliding straight on some mellow terrain to practice just a tail tap with no rotation.

Then try doing a subtle speed check whilst sliding again in the flats be rotating just the lower body against a stable upper body creating separation. Only do this so you rotate to your heel side like seen in the video.

Now try the full move whilst traversing across the hill on your toe side edge. Putting it all together both the hop with the rear leg extension and the rotation and kick that rear tail toe edge into the snow like seen in the video.

Finally try doing whilst traveling straight down the hill.

Here is another fun trick for trick tip Tuesday! This one is called a Frontside nose butter to pretzel 270 out.

First with your board off try the movement. Standing on your front leg and then kicking your rear leg out to the side so your chest is pointed down the hill whilst your hold your shoulders and front arm pointed down the hill as well. Then you are going to pop off this leg rotating 270 degrees backside so you land switch as seen in the video.

Then on an easy groomer try locking in that frontside nose butter sliding and then try to just pull it back also as seen in the video.

Then try doing the same move except this time hoping into the butter and then loading up that front leg to then pop out back so your board lands back pointed down the hill also shown in the video.

Now it’s time to try the full trick. To make sure you get the full rotation out make sure you use some counter rotation in your upper body through your spine to be able to rotate against the lower body. It’s also a good idea to quickly rotate your lower body with a scissoring move of your legs.

Once you master this trick try it off of rollers and you can even then try it on a box or rail.

The Half-Cab is a trick made famous by a famous legendary Skater named Steve Caballero.

This trick is a variation of a few trick tips that we have done before. The frontside nose roll and a frontside 180. However this trick is always done from a switch stance.

It’s important you are comfortable riding switch first.

Then start by riding across the trail switch on your heel side edge and try lifting the switch tail of the board as you shift your weight forward.

Once you are comfortable with that it’s time to add some rotation through the hips and spine. You will want to rotate frontside. Do this whilst adding more pressure to that switch nose and therefore doing a switch nose roll landing on your toes.

Finally it’s time to put it all today with a little bit more intensity to be able to spring off that switch nose.

Once you are comfy with these try them off rollers and other fun features.

Stay tuned to see how this gets progressed into a Cab 3.

There are many different types of flips. This flip is called the Wildcat. This is a flip done directly over the tail of the snowboard.

First before trying this you should be comfortable with 360’s and spotting your landings. This is mainly to have comfort in the air as well as spotting your landings.

Then it’s a good idea to work on this motion on a trampoline, into a foam pit, or into a swimming pool for the first few times without a board on.

Then with the board on try the movement just in the flat focusing on feeling the snap from the tail of the board. Remember using a flex through the spine to help add power to the Ollie and once in the air tightening your oblique. Plus a good extension pop through that rear leg.

Next try a few big ollies where you try taking your eyes off the landing zone and then finding it again prior to landing.

Then it’s time to try them into an airbag if you have one (Copper Woodward Flex) or into a deep powder landing.

Finally once your feeling good with them try putting on a fun park jump!

Here is a fun trick that combines a few of the trick tips that I have shown you before.

The Nollie Backside 180 is a fun trick to send off rollers.

First before trying this trick it’s important that you are comfortable with a backside 180 and nollies.

Once you are comfortable with these then look to break this trick down on some flat terrain without sliding. Try doing it without the board on by shifting your weight over that front foot at the same time rotating your spine and hips toward what will be your toe side edge. Then with a quick extension pop off that front foot and rotate that backside 180 landing evenly on two feet.

Then try it not sliding on the flats with the board on. Again trying to create that pop with the nose of the board.

Then before trying the full trick. Review again with a backside nose roll, then a nollie, and finally a backside 180.

Finally it’s time to put it all together. After getting that solid pop off your nose of the board it’s a good idea to really get plenty of retraction to give yourself time to land more on two feet and ride away switch.

Send it off rollers and other fun terrain features once you have it mastered.

Tail blocks are super fun to play with and can be done on a multitude of different types of terrain.

Start off by working on the combination of rotation and flexion extension movements stationary without your board on. As seen in the video focus on the 90 degree rotation whilst at the same time extending the rear leg and flexing your front leg.

It’s important to try to get that full extension of that rear leg to really get the edge of the tail of the board to set into the snow. It’s all about finding that sweet spot where you can get that stall on the tail.

Getting a grab as you do the tail block allows you counter balance to get the longest stall possible.

First try doing it with the board on standing still. It’s easiest starting on your toe edge and jumping frontside 90 degrees into it.

Then try doing a toe-side carve back up the hill as you come to a stop try it. Land it back into the fall line and ride away.

Finally try it on some fun natural or man made transitional snow features around the mountain. Have fun with it!
